How are you spending your summer vacation?

Here at NERD, high school students just like you will work on cutting-edge technology that will make a real difference in people's lives all over the world. Summer 2011 marks the 3rd summer for the NERD High School Internship Program and we are looking for smart, talented and enthusiastic students like you to make it a huge success! Last summer, NERD welcomed 5 awesome students from the Boston area. The interns worked on really cool projects alongside Software Engineers, Social Media Researchers, Marketing Managers, Technical Evangelists, Software Engineers in Test and Designers. As interns, your insider's look into high-tech professions may give you a little inspiration as you make plans for college. It'll also give you a head start on building a good resume. Sure beats scooping ice cream.

How to qualify

All applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a high school junior or senior in the Boston area (at the time of application)
  • Have a demonstrated interest in technology
  • Know how to e-mail and use Microsoft Office Word
  • Have a basic grasp of HTML, Visual Basic, or other programming language (preferred)
  • Be 16 years old and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Be available to work full time, 40 hours per week, for eight to ten consecutive weeks starting on June 27, 2011

All Boston area high school students are welcome to apply. We especially encourage applications from minorities (African American, Native American, Hispanic), young women, individuals with disabilities, and students from economically disadvantaged families.

Benefits

You will receive a competitive hourly wage plus a T pass and software discounts. Microsoft also offers you free beverages! You'll get more details on pay and benefits during the hiring process.

So what are you waiting for?

The following information is due by April 8th, 2011:

  • Download the application (.RTF, 369KB)
  • A resume highlighting computer-related experience, past employment or volunteer work, community involvement, and awards
  • A 250 word essay describing your passion for technology inside and outside of the classroom and what you hope to get out of an internship with Microsoft. This essay should describe why technology interests you and how that passion makes you the best candidate for an internship with Microsoft.
  • A copy of the student’s most recent academic transcript. Please ask your school to email a PDF version of this or fax this information (instructions included in the application)
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher or employer

Due to the high volume of applicants, we will not be able to respond to each application. If you are selected for an interview, an Intern Coordinator will contact you directly to discuss the next steps.
